Cows on the farm at Hotel Lukashansl

Our farm with livestock farming

The Mayr family's farm

The Gasthof Lukashansl and the Lukashansl farm with its alpine pasture in the Großglockner region have belonged together for ages. A wonderful cycle in those days. The cattle and pigs were reared on the mountain pasture in summer and in the barn in winter, slaughtered and marketed at the inn. The whole animal was utilized. And this is still the case today!

In 2005, the tethered barn was converted into a free-range pen and a larger manure pit was built. The cubicles were equipped with cow comfort mats and a high-standard milking parlor was built. We currently have 77 head of cattle in the barn, including 46 dairy cows, 1 bull, 13 calves and the rest young cattle. We also have 12 pigs, which we feed with grain. All the cattle are on the mountain pasture from around June 10th to mid-September. While the cattle spend time on the mountain pasture and are milked there, we are busy harvesting fodder for the winter in the valley.

When the weather permits, 3 to 4 cuts are made, hay as well as silage. When the young cattle come down from the mountain pasture, they remain on the pasture until the first snow falls.

The silage bales from the 1st to 4th cut are mixed in the feed mixer so that every cow gets the same thing to eat.

On our farm, we have a bull that runs with the cows in the loose housing and on the pasture. The cows are therefore inseminated naturally. Once the cow has inseminated, she is no longer milked 6 to 8 weeks before the calf is born. The animal can prepare for the birth of the calf. The calf is born after 9 months. It receives colostrum (colostrum) from the mother for the first week. The little animal is sufficiently supplied with the mother's antibodies.

If illnesses occur in the barn, we have a very good vet who discusses everything with us and treats the animals to our complete satisfaction. We also take part in the "Animal Health Service Austria". With several annual training courses from the LFI (Rural Training Institute), we are always up to date. For example, hoof health, homeopathy for diseases and antibiotic replacement.

Excursion tip: Our alpine hut

Be sure to visit our Gasthof Trauneralm in Käfertal, which is located right next to the agricultural pasture. The fantastic location at 1,530 meters above sea level in the middle of the Hohe Tauern National Park makes the Trauneralm the ideal starting point for hikes through the Hohe Tauern.
Stop in and let us spoil you with culinary delights or spend the night at the alpine hut in the middle of the mountains in cosy rooms or in dormitories.

Products with a freshness guarantee

Quality-conscious gourmets will particularly enjoy the many fresh products from our own farm at the Lukashansl.
Fresh milk, tasty Pinzgau cheese and high-quality meat and bacon from the Pinzgau cows are used in the hotel cuisine and in the Lukashansl restaurant to prepare many Austrian delicacies. We also make our own yogurt, curd cheese, jams, cakes and muesli. Because it simply tastes better that way!

Have you ever tasted fresh raw milk?

At Gasthof Lukashansl we also offer tasty raw milk that comes fresh and unpasteurized directly from our cows every day.

A special taste experience!
